Publication Of Cytori Breast Reconstruction Cell Therapy Trial Results

Cytori Therapeutics (NASDAQ: CYTX) has announced the publication of RESTORE-2 trial results in the peer-reviewed European Journal of Surgical Oncology. RESTORE-2 is a 71 patient multi-center, prospective clinical trial using autologous adipose-derived regenerative cell (ADRC)-enriched fat grafting for reconstruction of the breast after cancer surgery. The majority of patients underwent radiation prior to the procedure, creating an unfavorable ischemic environment for which breast reconstruction with ADRC-enriched fat grafting appears to be ideally suited.

Women with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) have high rates of diagnostic and invasive breast procedures after treatment with breast-conserving surgery (BCS) according to a study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. Breast-conserving surgery is the most common treatment for ductal carcinoma in situ and has proven to be an effective alternative to mastectomy in most women; however, the necessity for and likelihood of further diagnostic mammograms and invasive procedures following BCS are unknown.

New statistics released by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) show that chin augmentation is the fastest growing plastic surgery trend among all major demographics - a phenomenon which appears, in part, to be sparked by increased usage of video chat technology, an aging baby boomer population and a desire for success in the workplace. Chin augmentation grew more than breast augmentation, Botox ® and liposuction combined in 2011. The procedure skyrocketed in both women and men, as well as in all patients over the age of 20, with the largest increase seen in patients age 40 or older.

Hang onto that belly fat, it may come in useful! In a UK first, surgeons at King's College Hospital in London, have taken fat from a man's stomach and injected it into his head to help reshape it. The patient had had some of his skull removed, and surgery to reconstruct a shattered eye socket, cheekbone, and leg, following injuries sustained when he fell while climbing up a drainpipe outside his house. The patient is Tim Barter, a visual effects supervisor on the Dr Who television series.

Sientra Inc's silicone gel-filled breast implant for breast reconstruction or augmentation has been approved by the FDA, as long as the company carries out post-approval studies to assess the device's long-term effectiveness, safety, and rare disease outcomes. The implant is approved for females aged at least 22 years. These implants are surgically implanted either under the chest muscle or under breast tissue - the aim is to enlarge the breasts, or rebuild them after breast cancer surgery or some breast abnormality.
